VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver officially became a city way back on April 6th, 1886. Today, the mayor has revealed how the city plans on celebrating the 125th anniversary.
The city wants to re-create the party-like atmosphere that we saw on the streets during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Mayor Gregor Robertson says the celebration will take place at Jack Poole Plaza near Canada Place.
"It's a big day for Vancouver," he says. "I think the celebrations will be really a testament to all the cultures in Vancouver, to our First Nations history... with some of the fantastic music this city has produced."
Some of the events at Jack Poole Plaza:
Street hockey beteween 2 and 5 p.m.
Olympic Cauldron lighting
There will also be free birthday cake
Evening performances between 4 and 10 p.m
Canadian rockers 54-40 will headline the Birthday Live main stage as they celebrate their 30th anniversary
Dene singer/songwriter Leela Gilday whose recent acclaim includes a Western Canadian Music Award, a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, and an Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award
World renowned percussion ensemble, Uzume Taiko, who infuse traditional Japanese taiko drumming with a unique West Coast style
Bend Sinister, an indie band known for their high energy shows
Vancouver Bach Choir will lead the crowd in singing O Canada and Happy Birthday
mmHoP dancers will lead the birthday dance party.
Time Drifts, a large-scale video and light art installation by Berlin-based artist Phillipp Geist, will provide a visual presentation using projections, sound, fog and moving images
