Don't impulse-buy an Easter bunny: SPCA

They see an influx of people returning rabbits shortly after Easter

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The only bunnies you should be giving out this Easter are the chocolate ones!

Lorie Chortyk with the SPCA says every year they deal with an influx of people returning the fuzzy little rabbits. She tells us bunnies don't make for very good pets for children.

"Rabbits... make wonderful pets for adults, but [they are] prey animals, so they don't like being held," she explains. "They're just not the kind of cuddly pet that a child is going to be entertained with for very long."

"Once the novelty has worn off, we see these little bunnies coming into the shelters," she adds. "Or, even worse, people just dump them off in parks, where lifespan is very short for an abandoned rabbit."

She says in most cases, bunnies are an impulse buy and many people don't realize they have very unique care needs and can live up to 12 years.
