Olympic security boss not concerned about missed assignments

Mercer: No serious threats identified

Jim Goddard Feb 03, 2010 13:54:45 PM
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The head of Olympic security isn't concerned some police officers have been late or have missed their assigned duties in the weeks leading up to the Games.  RCMP Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer feels the issue has been overblown.

The staffing concerns were raised in a leaked Olympic security email.  Mercer admits two officers did not show up to an assignment at Pemberton Airport.  However he says they weren't needed because the airport was closed due to a heavy snowstorm.  Mercer also says some officers were late for an Olympic assignment, because their shuttle buses were stuck in a major traffic jam.  He says the shuttles are leaving earlier to adjust for traffic concerns.

Mercer says the overall Olympic risk assessment remains 'low', with no serious threats identified.
