Vancouver cracking down on two landlords

Council taking them to court

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver is telling the landlords of two buildings with missing smoke alarms, rats, and leaky roofs to fix those problems right away. City council wants to take them to court

Inspectors call the two buildings dangerous, but the people who live in the single rooms can't afford to go anywhere else.

They're on East Cordova near Carrall, and on Hastings near Carrall on the Downtown Eastside.

Councillor Kerry Jang says the landlords have been told to fix the buildings up, but nothing has happened, so this is a last resort.

"Some of these landlords just refuse to do it. They ignore the tickets. They ignore the warnings. They don't care about the fines. The only way to get them to do it, to fix up the stairs and the elevators and things like that, is to take them to court and make them do it."

The matter will go to council next week.
