WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - He won't be fired, but a West Vancouver Police officer convicted of assault in connection with the beating of a Vancouver delivery man is facing some stiff discipline--including demotion in rank and unpaid suspension.

Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich oversaw the investigation of West Vancouver Police Constable Griffin Gillan for his role in the alcohol-fueled attack on delivery man Firoz Khan in downtown Vancouver in January 2009.  Rich recommends that Gillan be suspended without pay for 120 hours, demoted to probationary constable and forced into alcohol counselling.  The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner still needs to approve the recommendations.

Gillan has already pleaded guilty and was given a 21-day conditional sentence. Gillan has been suspended without pay by the West Vancouver Police Board since March of 2009.
