VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The number one public space in Canada goes to the Vancouver sea wall. The positive news is good news for the city and local tourism industry.
Councillor Andrea Reimer says the recognition comes from
Spacing magazine's Summer 2011 edition.
"There was a panel and 135 judges that range from architects to urban planners and members of residents associations and Business Improvement Association's [BIA] from cities across the country. It is fairly subjective what makes a public space. They were given some latitude on that."
Aaron Jasper with the
Vancouver Park Board isn't surprised by the honour. "I think it is largely the setting that is the main attraction and being around forests. I think it is quite a unique location not only here in British Columbia, but obviously in Canada. That is the main draw."
About $5.5 million worth of upgrades were recently done to the English Bay portion. The project will be completed by July 5th.
