BURNABY (NEWS1130) - They're battered, bruised, and blistered, but nothing is going to stop 40 women from attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest ice hockey game ever.
Karen Sunner with the team explains it's all part of an effort to raise $400,000 for
Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The puck dropped yesterday at the
Burnaby 8 Rinks, where the women will play around the clock until September 5.
"My own sister took a puck to her ankle and her ankle was swollen," says Sunner. "She skated for the remainder of the four hour [shift] and is skating again right now.
"We have a concussion. I saw her go down but she got back up and she's great. We have pulled muscles and pretty much everything in between."
The women are sleeping in donated trailers in the ice rink parking lot, as Guinness rules forbid them from leaving the property.
They are getting their nutrition from a professional chef who works for Delta Hotels, who has volunteered to cook all 40 women three meals a day for the duration of their world record attempt.
"That's about 120 meals a day," notes Sunner. "What a guy."
The world record is currently held by an Edmonton team.
So far the women have raised $85,000. The rink is open 24-hours-a-day and the public is welcome to drop by anytime to show support and learn more about the cause.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes a build-up of mucus in the lungs, leading to serious and potentially fatal breathing difficulties.
