VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - With no rain expected in the southern part of the province for the next few days, fire experts are concerned about the possibility of more wildfires.
There have been 98 abandoned campfires in southeast BC over the last two weeks. Nine of those have developed into wildfires.
Fire Information Officer Karlie Shaughnessy says people need to take responsibility.
"The legal requirement is to have a shovel or at least eight litres of water and your campfire can't be larger than half-a-metre high by half-a-metre wide. This kind of large number of abandoned campfires that has sprung up and people are just becoming complacent."
She's concerned with the approach of hunting season, there could be more opportunities for campfires to get out of control.
The forecast calls for nothing but sunshine over the next week in the southern part of the province.
Leaving a campfire unattended can result in a $345 fine. If your campfire causes a wildfire, you may also be held liable for suppression costs and damages.
