It's peak season for head lice in schools

Expert says they see a lot of cases after a major break

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Your kids might be bringing home more than just homework during this second week of the school year. Head lice is a likely possibility during the first month in the classroom.

The kids are all clumped together sharing their cubby spaces and sharing the little critters with their classmates, says Dawn Mucci, CEO of LiceSquad Canada. "There are actually three peak seasons; [after] any major break... So, after summer holidays, after winter holidays, and after March break we tend to see a swell in lice cases."

She says parents should get on this; take a peek once a week!

"If you don't catch lice early and it becomes a bad infestation, chances are it will spread to playmates and other members of the family and it is a lot more difficult to get rid of," she explains.

Mucci says that means no sharing hats or hairbrushes. It's also a good idea for your kid to hang their coat on their desk chair instead of in the cloakroom.
