Cruise ships' fall change of course means big bargains

One-way cruises to LA start at $150: travel expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's the time of year for cheap adventures on the high seas - "repositioning" cruises are sailing now.

Trish Friesen with TripStyler.com explains that with the Alaska cruise season wrapping up, big ships need to reposition to other ports for adventures in warmer climates - and that means major deals.

"They don't want to sail with an empty ship, and though they may not be offering, you know, as exciting an itinerary, they'll still want to fill the rooms with people, which is ultimately paying customers, and so that's how they can offer them at such a discount," she tells News1130.

Right now, she says, thrifty travellers can snag a one-way three-day cruise to LA for just over $150 - but only they're prepared to book last minute, and find their own way home.

"Those are cheap. You do have to handle your airfare back, but by the same token September is a wonderful time to book airfare because typically it's cheaper this time of year and there's lots of airline sales going on," she says.

Friesen says you can book through a travel agent, or yourself online - with sites like RepositioningCruise.com.
