Enjoying Halloween on a budget

Get ideas around the house

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The cost of a costume doesn't have to be the spookiest part of Halloween.  The holiday is a great time to teach your kids about the value of a buck.

Every time you walk into a store, you're inundated with decorations and costumes destined to turn your adorable children into little demons.

Jeff Schwartz with Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada says you should give your kids a budget this year.  "Just like everything else in your life, the best way to do is to plan ahead.  Have your kids actually work that budget and decide what they want to see in terms of their costume and have them move within that budget."

He adds there are also things you can also scour your home for supplies before you head out and spend a bunch of money.

"Encourage your children to use their imagination or use their creativity to come up with something utilizing things around the house so you don't have to go out and spend the money on new things that are just going to be wasted after that particular day."

Schwartz explains you can also find great deals at dollar stores and second-hand shops.
