Teacher riding to raise awareness about mental illness

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A Vancouver teacher riding around the world to raise awareness about mental illness had his $4,000 bike stolen near Kamloops Thursday.

But today Michael Schratter says a real positive has come out of the loss.

"As the expression goes: If life gives you lemons, turn it into lemonade," he says. "The campaign and the awareness around it has just tremendously snowballed."

Schratter has seen an outpouring of support for his Ride Don't Hide campaign.

"People are recognizing that the campaign is about bettering the world and how ironic it is that one bad apple here is taking advantage of a situation as an opportunist," he says. "You know, someone is thinking they've found themselves a nice, expensive bike, and that doesn't sit well with the public."

He's back on the road tomorrow on a loaner bike, wrapping up his 40,000 km ride in Vancouver on Nov. 12.
