BC's minimum wage rises to $9.50 per hour on Tuesday

Before this spring BC had lowest minimum wage in Canada

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - BC's general minimum wage will rise by 75 cents on Tuesday to $9.50 an hour, while the minimum wage for liquor servers will increase to $8.75.

By next May, the minimum wage will rise to $10.25 an hour.

"When workers have more money in their pockets, they are in a better position to support themselves and their families - and that's good for the economy," said Margaret MacDiarmid, Minister of Labour, Citizens' Services and Open Government, in a statement.

"We also know that employers need to plan for the increases, which is why we have given considerable advance notice and we are raising the minimum wage in smaller increments."

Farmers working for piece rates will also have to be paid at least $9.50 an hour come Tuesday, and by next May that will rise with the general minimum wage to $10.25 an hour.

Last spring, the Liberal government finally raised BC's minimum wage, which was the lowest in Canada.
