Police chief responds to discharge of Stanley Cup rioter

An 18-year-old had pleaded guilty, then was handed an absolute discharge

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Vancouver Police Department's chief is responding to anger over a Stanley Cup rioter getting an absolute discharge.

Jim Chu says it just goes to show it pays to take time and get the charges right the first time.

The charge of possession of stolen property against the 19-year-old came out of a Surrey RCMP investigation, after he had bragged to friends about stealing clothes during the riot. The man in question was not prosecuted as a result of the work of the VPD's Integrated Riot Investigation Team.

Sixty rioters have been identified by the team, and it is recommending a total of 163 charges. Chu says in the coming week, they will be mobilizing a large number of volunteers to keep the investigation fresh in people's minds.
