Harper hounded by protesters at Science World visit

Some lingering from Occupy Vancouver, some against prohibition

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Prime Minister has been greeted by some Vancouverites with boos and hisses.

Stephen Harper's visit to celebrate completed renos at Science World was a big attraction for protesters.

They shouted him down as he left a news conference.

"Go back to America, where you belong!" shouted one man.

Some lingered from Occupy Vancouver, others were holding signs against prohibition.

With a voice above everyone else, Jodie Emery shouted:

"Prime Minister Harper, keep Canada safe! End prohibition! Protect our children! The drug war does not work! America proves it does not work! Stop wasting our tax dollars!"

It happened as politicians gathered to pat each other on the back for renovation work completed, or nearly completed, at the now 25-year-old Science World.

Inside, Harper applauded $35 million in partnership funding.

"Science World isn't just a place to learn hands-on about science and technology," he said. "It's a place that gets you thinking and makes you want to learn more. Today, Science World is bigger and better than ever."

The renovations include a new 1,000-square-metre green roof with a roof top deck overlooking False Creek, and solar panel installations to heat the building's water supply.

There's a new lobby and 1,200-square-metres of new gallery space.

Areas surrounding the park will become a 3,200-square-metre outdoor science park, expected to be completed in 2012.

The province and the federal government each contributed $10.5 million.

To mark significant completion, Science World admission on Saturday, Dec. 3 will be free.
