Legalizing weed won't happen under Harper's watch

Gregor Robertson in favour

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and four former city leaders do not have enough juice to change Prime Minister's Stephen Harper's position on pot.

It was question number one by reporters when Harper met the media on Friday.  He says legalizing marijuana won't happen under his government.

"No, will not happen under our government.  We're strongly opposed to the legalization of drugs.  Obviously, we're very concerned about the spread of drugs in the country and the damage it's doing to our kids and as you know we've got legislation before the House [of Commons] to crack down, specifically, on drug traffickers."

Pot activist Jodie Emery says Harper's stance is ignorant, but she's not surprised.

"Harper bringing in all these tough new laws is only going to make the streets more dangerous and make gangsters even more rich and more in control of these drugs, when we should be controlling, taxing and regulating it ourselves.  [We need to] keep our communities safe by ending prohibition, the same way they dealt with the problem during alcohol prohibition."

"He's against the opinion of the majority of Canadians who believe marijuana should be legalized.  Public opinion and most people know that the drug war is a failure, Harper is going in the opposite direction," she adds.
