VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - If your child feels this season is all about "getting," it may be time for a reality check.
News1130 is finding out the best way to involve your kids in helping others during the holidays.
Maybe a day at the soup kitchen or food bank is in order. Or Paula Sanchez with the national mentoring charity "
kids.now" says the easiest way to give back is get involved in a cause that is important to you or your child.
"It builds your own self esteem; [it] certainly makes you feel very satisfied with the ability to ultimately bless somebody else," she explains.
Sanchez adds getting involved can teach kids team-building skills and awareness of social issues they haven't been exposed to. "Becoming part of a solution to some of those needs I think comes with tremendous value and life-learning experiences for kids."
"Paying it forward and giving back is something we should do all year round," she notes. "However, the holiday season is the height of when we all start reflecting and thinking about our own lives."
