VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Some of Vancouver's most vulnerable are now a little better prepared to brave the elements this winter; $30,000 in supplies for the homeless were distributed across shelters in the Downtown Eastside last night.
More than 40 volunteers helped deliver boxes of gloves, toques, boots, fleece and even toiletries to area shelters. The
Angels in the Night initiative is spearheaded by Invis mortgage brokers who raise money throughout the year to help buy some basic necessities.
Volunteer Paula Siemens tells us they loaded three small buses full of clothing and other items.
"Obviously, you would like to try to stay as clean and disease-free as possible. So there are items like shampoo and soap that are important, and those are the items the shelters seem to really need," she explains.
Siemens adds every year, local shelters give the Angels in the Night a most-needed list. "Some of it is bedding, so obviously they must go through a lot of bedding at the emergency shelters. Sometimes it's PJs and socks while a lot of it is toiletries and all that."
Earlier in the day, the volunteers also helped serve lunch at the
Salvation Army's Anchor of Hope shelter on East Cordova.
