VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Six new charges have been laid against a Richmond man accused of getting girls drunk and high before sexually assaulting them.
Martin Tremblay is now charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death, two counts of failing to provide necessities of life and two counts of obstructing justice.
The offence date on the new charges is listed as March 1, 2010.
That's when 16-year-old Kayla Lalonde and 17-year-old Martha Hernandez died of overdoses within hours of each other in Burnaby and Richmond.
Tremblay was questioned in the case, but charges weren't laid until Wednesday.
Lalonde's great uncle, Calvin Bee, says his family has been waiting for this day for a long time.
"To bring closure to that part of our family and the other family that lost a young girl as well is bittersweet," Bee said. "As one of the elders of our family, I would have to stand beside my nephew and the family and give them all the support that I can."
In February, Vancouver Police promised they would act on claims a man was giving young women on the Downtown Eastside alcohol and drugs until they passed out.
People working in rape relief shelters told police the man would take advantage of the girls when they were unconscious.
In September, Tremblay was charged with sexually assaulting four girls between 14 and 19-years-old between 2005 and 2007.
"It's been a long time coming and I know I'm not the only one who has been impacted by this," said Mona Woodward with the
Aboriginal Front Door Society. "This is really good news just before Christmas when those family members should have been celebrating with those young women."
Tremblay will appear in Vancouver Provincial Court Thursday morning.
Mounties are expected to release more information about the case at that time.
