How built-in car technology affects your driving

Many treat their cars like their offices

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - As we told you last week, there are fewer deaths being caused by distracted drivers around BC, even though police say cell phones are still the cause of many crashes.  But what about the other distractions?

Manufacturers are trying to make your drive safer, but motorists say there is simply too much technology to handle behind the wheel.

It's all about the "intelligent features" at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  Features like a blind spot monitoring system, lane-keeping systems, and voice activated controls for phones, GPS, email and Internet.

Folks we're chatting with say the bells and whistles can also take your attention away from the road.

One man says he can't stand having any kind of screen for the front seat.  "I have actually seen people drive and watch a movie at the same time, it's brutal."  He adds automakers should take more responsibility.  "They are to blame; they're the ones putting it in there."

Others say they can handle all the technology in the car.  One man says he can talk, text and email without touching his phone and he doesn't think they're distractions.  "It's not a distraction because it's what makes me money and puts food on my table, so I have no choice.  If I'm not going to do it then somebody else will."

Companies like Ford say it's all about providing drivers with quick and safe responses in any condition.
