Surrey's mayor calls for transit changes

Dianne Watts says cities need to have input on transit projects

SURREY (NEWS1130) - Mayor Dianne Watts wants cities to have a say on what transit projects should look like before they get approved. She wants the province to give mayors a voice on the TransLink board.

The TransLink board signed off an major projects like the Evergreen Line last year. Meanwhile, Watts has been calling for better bus service in Surrey for years.

"We have no input into the plan, we can't shape the plan. Our only function is to look at a plan that is placed before us and raise money to fund it."

Watts is also one of several mayors who want a complete audit of TransLink as it looks at jacking up fares by more than 12 %.

She says if BC's Auditor General or the Municipal Auditor won't do it, the mayor's council will look at bringing in someone on its own.
