BC Ferries putting a half-billion dollars into aging vessels

No word yet on fare changes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - BC Ferries plans to spend $500 million in the coming years to replace or refurbish aging vessels on its minor routes.

Deborah Marshall tells News1130 it's too early to say if fares will be increased.

"We need to have conversations with government, as far as what level of funding that they would be willing to commit. We also have to have conversations with our customers," she explains.

Despite breakdowns from time to time, it could still be 10 years before aging ferries on routes between the Mainland, Gulf Islands and Nanaimo will be looked at.
