North Shore avalanche warning extended

Crews asking people to stay out of the backcountry

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The avalanche warning that covers the North Shore has been extended.  There's an urgent warning from North Shore Rescue.  They're asking people to put off any plans to hit the backcountry.

"There is going to be a more intense snowfall.  We've got this huge wind-slap that has formed and the avalanche rating is high," says the unit's Tim Jones.

Conditions should stay this dangerous until at least Tuesday.

The rescue unit was already sent in to save four snowboarders on Thursday, who had gone out of bounds.  The avalanche threat at that time was only moderate, but rescues conducted during high-risk avalanche periods risks the lives of not only back-country enthusiasts, but the people who are rescuing them.

"It's not safe, the warnings are there and the concerns are also there.  On behalf of North Shore Rescue we want to advise everyone to stay in-bounds, stay in controlled areas."
