Driver's test measures effects of dementia

It also looks at depression and anxiety

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A University of Toronto Psychology Professor believes a test to measure a driver's cognitive ability would go a long way in making Canada's roads safer.

It's not just elderly drivers and dementia, the test would also focus on the effects of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety, medications and even post-concussion syndrome.

"A practical and accessible screening test to identify those drivers who may be a risk to themselves and others could be used at a time of driver's license renewal, or made available anytime at a driver's request," says Dr. Konstantine Zakzanis, the creator of BrainScreen.  "Currently, there is no cognitive acuity testing for any sort of drivers out there."

BrainScreen is based on a number of traditional paper-and-pencil tests that have long been used to measure things like memory, information processing speed, reaction times and ability to focus.  It is the first of its kind in North America.

"What we did is we automated all these tests and placed it online so a user can complete it in about 10 to 15 minutes," adds Zakzanis. "Once the user finishes the test there is an immediate output."

BrainScreen is not just for drivers, Zakzanis it's an early warning system for anyone developing cognitive problems, allowing them to seek treatment earlier.

"We've spoken to various levels of government and they all seem quite interested in implementing something like this."

In 2025, one-in-four Canadians will be 65 and older.  Currently, half a million Canadians have Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.  By 2040, that number is expected to more than double.
