Driver involved in fatal crash may have been on drugs

Man from the Lower Mainland was killed

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) - Police think the driver involved in a fatal crash on the Sea to Sky Highway near Function Junction was on drugs.  The 19-year-old from Calgary is now in hospital with serious injuries.

The teen was driving a pick-up truck that crossed the centre line and collided into a southbound limo.  The driver in that vehicle, a 54-year-old man from the Lower Mainland, was killed after the limo caught on fire and exploded.

RCMP Sergeant Peter Thiessen says charges have yet to be recommended.

"It's another example of impaired driving but in this particular case we're alleging it's by drug.  It's not something that's talked about a lot, but it is a significant problem beyond impaired driving by alcohol.  Impaired driving by drug is an issue and is something that we deal with quite often."

Thiessen adds the road was wet and slushy at the time of the crash, but it's not clear if that played a factor.   The highway was also closed for several hours.
