VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Saturday is
World Cancer Day and a local charity,
F*** Cancer, is leading the way in prevention. The charity started two years ago with the mandate of early detection.
Founder Yael Cohen says it's all about young people communicating more with their parents.
"Our generation teaches its parents more than any generation ever has. So, instead of teaching them how to program their TV or use their new iPhone, let's teach them something that can actually save their life and that is: how to look for cancer instead of just finding it."
Cohen adds parents had the awkward "sex talk" with their kids, now its time the children to pay it forward and talk to them about cancer.
"It's small, realistic changes that we can all make to our lifestyle that make a huge difference when it comes to early detection and preventing cancers."
The past year has seen Cohen take the F*** Cancer message to the UN and White House as her t-shirt slogan campaign continues to go global.
Every year cancer takes the lives of over seven million people worldwide and about 177,800 Canadians are diagnosed annually. Roughly 75,000 die from the disease.
