Lunchtime earthquake shakes Vancouver Island

An early afternoon earthquake recorded off the west coast of Vancouver Island

Andrew Hopkins Feb 04, 2012 19:22:03 PM
TOFINO (NEWS1130) - A 5.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Saturday just after noon about 170 kilometres west of Tofino off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Tofino Mayor Perry Schmunk says he was on the beach at the time and didn't feel a thing, but he says that's in direct contrast to a September 2011 magnitude-6.4 earthquake. Just after that quake, Schmunk says the ground turned and he felt like he was standing on a waterbed.

The National Earthquake Information Centre says there was no danger of a tsunami from the shallow quake.

The shaker was felt by people in Vancouver, Victoria as well as in Washington State.
