VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The latest Chilean earthquake and aftershocks have caused the evacuation of many areas, impacting thousands of people. And Chileans living in Vancouver are holding a fundraiser to help their families in need.
Employees of the Chilean bakery "Panaderia Latina" (near Wellington and Joyce in Vancouver), and other members of the Chilean community will be at selected stations on Friday, collecting donations for the Canadian Red Cross Chilean Earthquake Relief Fund during the morning rush hour and from 2-6pm.
Teams will be on-hand at the following stations: Waterfront, Burrard, Granville, Commercial-Broadway, Metrotown, King George and Lougheed Town Centre. Chilean musicians will also be performing at Metrotown in the afternoon.
Leslie Riquelme with the bakery says she fears for her family's safety in Chile. "My uncle had to evacuate his business and I have an Aunt that actually lives up in the hills of Valparaiso and so right now they're sending everyone up there. So far she's okay, but they're really scared. The people are terrified."
A website has been set up for Chilean relief.
