Random breathalyzer tests might be on the way

Justice Department has posted a discussion paper on its website

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The government is looking at making it easier for police to nab drunk drivers, but it would also mean giving cops the green light to randomly pull motorists over.  Governments in Australia and New Zealand have already given their authorities the right to randomly pull over drivers, but Canadian governments haven't gone that route yet.  The move would give police the opportunity to ask motorists if they've been drinking, and, if need be, give them breathalyzer tests.  Critics suggest there could be Charter issues with that kind of law.

The Justice Department has posted a discussion paper on its website, noting breath-testing provisions in the Criminal Code are now 40-years-old.
