Record year for workplace accidents

WorkSafe B.C. hands out nearly $4.5 million in penalties

John Ackermann Mar 12, 2010 07:33:30 AM

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Employers are getting a failing grade for on-the-job safety from WorkSafe B.C. Turns out 2009 was a record year for injuries.

Most injuries were recorded in the construction sector -- as the industry accounted for 59 per cent of the nearly $4.5 million in penalties handed out out by WorkSafe B.C. last year. Individual fines went up to $250,000.

The largest punishment was imposed against Canadian Natural Resources for an incident involving a young worker who fell from a drilling rig in Northern B.C.
