Canadian dollar almost at par; more people cross-border car shopping

Could save thousands

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - With the Canadian dollar almost at par with the U.S. buck, more people are looking at importing cars from the States.  However, Todd MacDonald from Vancouver's Westport Motor Cars says people are not doing in that for cars in the $70,000 to $100,000 price range.

He says they're sticking to models that cost $35,000 to $55,000 when they import from the States.

MacDonald adds professionals who make $100,000 to $200,000 a year are holding on to their cash right now instead of buying a Porsche.  "I think people think it could keep going, it might go right through par.  So maybe they are going to wait to take advantage of a bigger saving.  I'm not sure what the thinking is behind it.  I just know it's awful hard to get the phones to ring."

MacDonald says he's seen the same thing before when the Canadian dollar has hovered around the $1 U.S. mark.
