VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The provincial government is offering to fund the demolition of part of a Vancouver school, and the idea has sparked controversy. The school in question, Sir Guy Carleton Elementary, is a two room school house and heritage site. MLA Adrian Dix will join parents and students of the school in protest. "The building was damaged in a fire by vandals on March 2nd 2008, and it was expected that it would be repaired by summer. The government has simply reneged on its commitment under the school protection program to repair the building."
Dix says the Liberals were supposed to finance the repairs on the roof of the 108-year-old building after the arson, but instead are funding the demolition of the building. "The only thing the provincial government has money for is to demolish this historic building. They will pay for the demolition of the building but they won't pay to fix it." Dix adds by funding the building's demolition, the government is sending a poor message to student.
