VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Vancouver School Board predicts teacher layoffs and school closures are on the way as it faces an $18 million budget shortfall. Board staff laid out the financial picture Thursday night, saying the April 7th budget will also likely see program cuts and an overhaul of the entire school calendar.
School districts province-wide are facing similar problems, with Kamloops-Thompson trustees warning of staff layoffs as they cope with a $2.4 million shortfall.
Boards are furious the province has hiked per-student funding but cut money to other areas. They say the government is balancing its budget on the backs of school children.
