Public warning issued following two Vancouver home invasions

Both victims were elderly but not hurt

Jill Drews Mar 19, 2010 13:31:46 PM

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Police have issued a public warning after two elderly women have been victims of home invasion robberies over the last week or so.

Both robberies happened in the evening, one on March 9th in South Cambie, the other on Wednesday in Renfrew-Collingwood.  Police say the victims are very shaken up and that's why they aren't releasing the exact locations.  Men broke in, stole some valuables and left.  Neither woman was seriously hurt.

Constable Jana McGuinness says detailed descriptions of the thieves aren't available.  "In both these cases, the men are wearing dark clothing, so the descriptions are quite limited.  There's nothing to suggest at this point that they're linked, but they're troubling.  They're two home invasions involving seniors."  Investigators aren't sure if the homes were targeted because elderly women lived there.

McGuinness says this should serve as a reminder to go over safety and security with any elderly relatives you may have.  "Sometimes when the information comes from a family member, they listen more carefully and they understand it more fully."  She adds it's most important to teach them about 911 so officers have the opportunity to get to the scene as quickly as possible.
