VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) -
If someone calls your Telus phone and says in exchange
for your personal information you'll get thousands of travel dollars, it's a
scam.
Shawn Hall with Telus says in the last 24 hours, the company has received numerous calls about a new phone scam and is warning customers to be careful. "What we're hearing from customers who are calling in about this is that they pickup a phone call from a 905 number and hear a message that says 'Hello because you're a valued Telus customer you are going to receive 3000 travel dollars, to accept this press 1'. If you press 1, someone comes on the line and essentially tries to talk you out of personal information."
Hall says what it most likely comes down to is identity theft, and Telus will do what they can to help keep your personal information safe. "If you get a call like this, hang up. If you have given personal information call your local police or call Telus' fraud department so we can help you protect your identity. Our security department has been in touch with police."
He adds 905 is an Ontario area code, and police are in the process of tracking down exactly where the calls originated. Hall points out this isn't a new scam, and this time it is targeting customers in B.C and Alberta.
