Eco-dairy in Abbotsford revolutionizes farming

From robotic milkers to energy made from manure

Tamara Slobogean Jun 16, 2010 06:22:12 AM
ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) - You can now show the kids where milk and eggs really come from, as Canada's first eco-dairy demonstration farm opens up in Abbotsford today.

Natural, healthy and local food is the focus of the Bakerview EcoDairy. Bill Vanderkooi with the Nutriva Group says the farm also integrates some exciting and new technology. "We're using a robotic milker, which is basically fully automated so the cows are practically free run, so they get milked when we want."

By September he expects their anaerobic digester will be up and running; that will convert cow manure into electricity for the site. As of 9 a.m., you can tour the farm and even pick up a dozen free run eggs from the market. The market is also conveniently located across from the busy Costco and Starbucks on Sumas Way.
