Solar heating pilot project for the City of Vancouver

Half the cost of installation covered

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The City of Vancouver is looking at a pilot project that would have the city pay half the cost of installing solar heating in your home, but the head of the Greater Vancouver Homebuilders Association isn't so sure the program will be all that popular.

Typically a solar hot water system would cost $7200 so the city would pay half that for the 50 homeowners it accepts for its program.  The Association's Peter Simpson says that is still $3600 you would have to pay out.

Simpson adds homeowners who have that kind of cash would rather spend it on something like new countertops or a hardwood floor.  "In all the years out here I have not had one home owner or potential homeowner phone me up and ask me how can I get more information on solar energy."

He says no doubt there will be people who will sign up for the pilot program simply because they believe it's the right thing to do.
