Warning for people heading south for body scans

Will cost you $500

Amelia John/The Globe and Mail Jul 20, 2010 08:28:51 AM

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There's a warning about preventative body scans being offered in the U.S.  The B.C. College of Physicians and Surgeons says the procedures could cost Canadians in the long run.

For $500, you can get a body scan from California-based Ultra Life Body Scan in Point Roberts and Bellingham.  The B.C. College of Physicians and Surgeons calls the scans "cut rate" and says the chances of finding something serious are low.

Deputy Registrar Jack Burak tells the Globe and Mail; patients will run to their doctors here if something benign pops up, which will cost the provincial health care system.

Health Canada also has concerns about the scans.
