VANCOUVER (NEWS11300 - The Downtown Eastside street market has been up and running for nearly two months now, and after becoming a big hit within the local community, it's now expanding.
Until now, the weekly Sunday street market was set up at Pigeon Park, on the corner of East Hastings and Carrall. But Tami Starlight with the Downtown Eastside Neighborhood Council says that's changing. "We're officially shutting down the Carrall Street Greenway between Cordova and Hastings, and we're going to have more vendors and buyers...A lot of people are looking out for each other, and we really want to try and retain the great things about our community."
The market features dozens of vendors selling trinkets: some of them dug up by dumpster divers, others hand-made arts and crafts. In the past, they would have been ticketed for selling without a vendor's license. And technically, the market still needs the green light from the city, but Starlight says police have been very cooperative so far.
