Smoke from B.C.'s wildfires chokes up Alberta

Second highest per cent of the province in high-to-extreme fire danger in a decade

ALBERTA (NEWS1130) - Smoke from B.C.'s wildfires has prompted an air quality warning in Alberta. The province's chief medical officer is warning that smoke is drifting east and could pose a problem for people with heart or lung problems.

Smoke is expected to affect air quality in Alberta until at least Sunday.

Environment Canada's John McIntyre says weather conditions have been different in B.C. than they have in Alberta, and that's produced a lot of fires. "There's so many of them, and they're burning strong. There's been hot and dry weather in B.C. as opposed to what Alberta has been getting."

Nearly 1,500 wildfires have been sparked in B.C. since April, about one hundred of them are currently active.
