Vancouver hen-keepers loving their backyard birds

Sheila Scott Aug 21, 2010 02:14:49 AM
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Backyard chickens have been allowed in Vancouver for just over two months now, and one backyard hen-keeper says so-far-so-good.

Duncan Martin, who also makes coops, has sold 4 of his homemade 'Van-Coopers' which go for around $600 and says interest has been steadily growing.  "A few phone calls, probably about 10 emails a week, from all different angles, and been getting steadier and steadier business to the point it's allowing me to make a modest living."

Martin keeps his own chickens and says he's been enjoying every minute of it. "Really fun. I really like having them there. Just a really nice relaxing part of my day, go over there and hang out with them for a little while."

He's also had good reaction from people keeping hens in his coops. "So far, they love them, they're easy to use and easy to clean out."

And it seems some with ties to city hall may even be looking into it. ".I have an unconfirmed report, that one city councillor's wife, I'll have them remain nameless right now, is thinking about getting chickens. So I'll have to follow up on that."

He says there's lots of information online about keeping backyard hens, but if you're curious Martin will be at the PNE near the pig races showing off his coops.
