VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - We are getting more reaction to the Vancouver Police report outlining the mistakes made during the missing women's investigation. News1130 spoke with former Vancouver Mayor Philip Owen, who was in office when the victims began disappearing.
He says he's pleased with the VPD report, that confirmed police had evidence suggesting Robert Pickton as the murderer over two years before he was arrested.
Owen, who was chair of the Police Board at the time, says they messed things up, but fingers shouldn't only be pointed at Vancouver Police, but Coquitlam RCMP as well.
He explains there is no need to waste money on an inquiry when it could be better spent elsewhere. "I think we should spend that money rescuing these women at a much earlier age, before they get into this life of abuse, chemical dependency and drug addiction with pimps. For years they were in their 20s and 30s, we should have rescued them."
Owen adds hindsight is 20/20, if they could do it all over again -- things would be different.
