News1130 finds out what happens with curbside composting

The process starts at home

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Curbside composting is gaining in popularity, but what exactly happens to all those food scraps and yard trimmings?  News1130 is finding out where they all go.

Steve Aujla with Fraser Richmond Soil & Fibre says it all starts with the curbside pick-up.  "Probably that same day or the next day, the materials will end up at our manufacturing facility.  At that point, we would pre-screen the materials for contaminants like plastic."

He adds that's when they put together a recipe to make a big batch of composting mix, speeding up what Mother Nature does naturally.  "We have different portions of each material and we put them all under our covered aerated static pile system. It stays there for roughly seven to nine weeks."

The finished compost is then ready to go right back into your garden, recycling what would otherwise end up in a landfill.
