Study: Seniors like news showing young people in bad light

It boosts self-esteem of those between 50 to 65

Mike Lloyd/Globe and Mail Aug 31, 2010 07:28:05 AM

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Ageism is alive and well.  The view from the rocker on the front porch while yelling "get off my lawn" is good, especially if it involves news showing younger people in a negative light.

A study from researchers in the U.S. and Germany shows people aged 50 to 65 tend to focus on stories that reflect poorly on young folk.  It actually raises their self-esteem.

The study will be in the Journal of Communications and, as the Globe and Mail reports, it also found younger people preferred to ignore news stories involving older people altogether.

Don't you wish we'd just all get along?  Well, as the late, great and crusty actor Burgess Meredith once put it, "You can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which gets filled first!"

Score one for the older generation.
