A car falls into a pit at a construction site in Vancouver

Two people taken to hospital

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Two people are lucky to have escaped with their lives after an accident has sent a car flying eight meters into an excavation pit at a construction site in Vancouver this afternoon.

It appears two cars were trying to avoid a collision on Main St. and 31st Avenue, when the driver of a light-coloured sedan veered off, but ended up breaking through the fence, and landed upside down in a puddle of water inside an open construction pit.

Police say two people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries. It appears a small depression at the base of the pit  may have saved the driver of the flipped sedan from a more serious injury.

Steve was there when it happened and says it's a miracle the driver wasn't killed. "We saw the aftermath... The car went flying in... There were about 14 police cars. We all looked over and thought the guy's got to be dead."

News1130's Kim Seale has flown over the site and says the hole is massive. "It's a big one. It looks like it's going to be a big apartment complex. But it's just a big open pit right now."

Police say it's not clear what might have caused the crash.
