New wireless standard could serve as city-wide hotspot

Would use "white space"

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Imagine a Wi-Fi hotspot that could cover an entire city.

Yesterday, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers published a new wireless standard called WRAN and that's exactly what it does. It would cover 31,000 square kilometers using leftover pieces of frequency known as "white space."

The speeds would be comparable with the fastest 3G networks and penetrates buildings but current devices wouldn't pick it up.

The large range needs lots of power; so, this isn't your home network but it would make it easy to get Internet to full cities and rural areas.
