NASHVILLE, TN (NEWS1130) - Alex Edler scored in the sixth round of the shootout and then Roberto Luongo stopped Colin Wilson to lift the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.
Edler's winner came after Alex Burrows and David Legwand traded goals in the third round to keep the shootout going.
Ryan Kesler opened the scoring on a powerplay 11:42 into the first period as he fired a one-timer past Pekka Rinne. Kesler now has five goals in his past six games.
The early lead was short-lived for the Canucks as Colin Wilson snuck one past Roberto Luongo 2:05 later when he put a wrist shot on net from the right-hand boards.
Late in the opening frame the Canucks got some offence from an unlikely source. Byron Bitz hammered home a pass from Henrik Sedin with 1:39 left in the first period for his first goal with Vancouver. Then just 23 seconds later, Bitz set up Daniel Sedin with a backhanded pass from behind the goal line and Daniel finished it off to give Bitz his first assist with the Canucks.
Nashville stormed back in the second period. Sergei Kostitsyn and Mike Fisher scored 1:02 apart to tie the game up 3-3.
The game stayed even through the rest of regulation and overtime which sent it to a shootout. It was the third straight game that went to a shootout for the Canucks. Vancouver also went to overtime for a fifth straight game and an eighth time in its past 10 contests.
The Canucks allowed at least 40 shots for a third straight game as Luongo made 37 saves, and five more in the shootout to record the victory.
Kesler's first period goal was the only shot the Canucks had on the powerplay as they went one-for-one with the man-advantage, while the Predators were unsuccessful in four attempts.
The Canucks will now travel to Minnesota to face the Wild on Thursday night.
