New bill could put an end to the silent hybrid

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hybrid cars could be getting noisier.  The U.S. Congress is adding sound performance requirements for hybrids and electric cars to an auto safety bill.

Researchers and safety groups say the quiet operation of hybrid vehicles at low speeds pose risks for unsuspecting pedestrians.

News1130 Business Editor Richard Dettman owns a Toyota Prius and feels it’s up to the driver of the hybrid to be more careful.  He says you quickly discover the vehicle doesn’t make much noise, once you’re in it.

Dettman adds you realize you have to be more defensive in your driving, especially around cyclists and pedestrians.  “Just take that extra step to be more defensive, rather than have a car that makes noise all the time.  I think it’s incumbent on the driver to simply be more aware.”

U.S. research has found hybrid vehicles are twice as likely to be involved in pedestrian crashes at low speeds compared with cars with conventional engines.
