Brace for a rainy Christmas…yet again

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – This is turning out to be a miserable day, in terms of the weather, for people scrambling to get around during the last minute Christmas preparations. Heavy rain and high winds are making driving difficult in many areas.

If your travelling the Sea to Sky this Christmas Eve, be very careful. The slopes along the route will be very unstable over the next 24 hours, and with near zero temperatures inland, expect a sleety mess as you close in on Whistler Village. But overall, the only snow in the mountain forecast is half-way up the slopes.

Rain is also in the forecast for the high elevations along the Coquihalla, the connector and through Allison Pass between now and Christmas morning.

Vancouver Island will see heavy rain and wind in Duncan, Courtenay and Victoria. So far things are looking good for BC Ferry passengers.

Heavy rain and high tides are backing up water in the Courtenay River. A pathway near the city airport has been closed, but no home or stores have been affected by flooding.

Mayor Greg Phelps says the flood threat eased a bit this morning after the tide peaked, but the danger isn’t over. “We’re going to have our crews and our staff on stand-by all through the Christmas and Boxing Day[s]. I think the next scheduled break in the weather is some sunny periods forecast on Wednesday.”
