TransLink tests new fare gates

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you took the Canada Line this past week, you probably saw the new fare gates at the stations being powered up. But don’t expect the machines to be checking your tickets any time soon.

Derek Zabel with TransLink says there is still a lot of behind-the-scenes work to be done before the technology starts operating next fall.

“A lot of testing that needs to happen is underway for all the back-end systems and all the support systems between now and sometime into next year,” Zabel explains. “So people will see from time to time those screens powered-up and powered-down, but that will all be during testing period.”

He adds they are not rushing the gates into operation.

“You need to make sure the systems are running, make sure you are dotting all you I’s and crossing all your T’s. Making sure the system is up and running and that you don’t have to move the stake any further. You want to make sure when you do it, you do it correctly and do it right.”

Even without the gates, transit officers are reporting a decrease in fare cheats. They’ve given out 2,000 fewer fare evader tickets this year even with 40 per cent more checks.
